It’s not always easy for Americans to get a decent haircut in Paris.  How do you find a good stylist?  How do you communicate what you want if you don’t speak French?  Will they even bother to follow your instructions or just do whatever the hell they want?  The “do whatever the hell they want” (or more likely “whatever the hell they think you Americans want”) attitude is more common than you can imagine here in France, so trying a new stylist here is always a crapshoot at best.

I had a chance to visit the Montecino Salon in Paris the other day because I needed a haircut and also because I got the crazy idea in my head that I wanted my hair to be gray.  Yes, gray.  While colored hair of all shades is the rage in the States, it’s not so much here, and they kind of looked at me like I had lost my mind.  Still it is an Aveda salon, which means they were nice enough to give it a try.  They bleached a couple of test pieces, which ended up looking cool enough that I just left it at that.  I ended up with a really great haircut, and was treated to some time inside the treatment room with the Iyashi Dome.  The dome covers most of your body and emits infrared light to improve circulation, regenerate tissue and cells, and makes you sweat like a pig on a hot Mississippi day to get rid of toxins in your body.  It left me completely rejuvenated and warm in a way that I haven’t felt for a minute since I moved to Paris last November.   When I booked an appointment at Montecino, they made sure to pair me with a stylist who spoke English, and he was absolutely meticulous about following my instructions.

The salon is located smack in the middle of Paris, not far from the Louvre, which made me think it would be geared to the tourist crowd.  Instead I found a subdued, upscale, modern salon where I immediately felt at home as both a Parisian and an American.  Montecino stocks the full range of Aveda products, including the Brilliant Humectant Pomade which my stylist used to give my hair shine and keep it in place.  So if you’re visiting or live in Paris, definitely check out Montecino!
